Sony has lowered its sales forecast for its flagship PlayStation 5 console, citing weaker sales in its gaming division. The company now expects to sell 21 million units of the PS5 in the fiscal year ending in March, down from the previous forecast of 25 million units. Despite this news, Sony reported record quarterly profit in the December quarter. The company sold 8.2 million PS5 units in that period, bringing the total sales for the fiscal year to 16.4 million. Sony also revised its sales forecast for the gaming division and the overall company. The gaming division’s sales forecast was lowered, primarily due to a decrease in hardware sales. Operating profit in the gaming division fell due to increased losses from hardware and a decline in sales of first-party games. However, Sony’s financial services unit saw a significant increase in revenue, and the image sensor business reported a rise in sales.
