Hawaii has become a leader in electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the United States. The state ranks fifth in overall EV adoption, accounting for 11.9% of new retail vehicles sold. Interestingly, Hawaii is the top state for EV adoption without participating in the California Air Resources Board’s Zero-Emission Vehicle program. The main reasons for Hawaii’s success in EV adoption are high fuel costs, availability of renewable energy for charging, and the cultural inclination towards stewarding the land. Despite some challenges like lack of charging infrastructure and limited vehicle choices, the interest in EVs continues to grow in Hawaii.
