The remote islands that are critical to a UK bet on wind energy

The Shetland islands, which are located in the northmost part of the U.K. and Scotland, offer some of Europe's most windy conditions. This makes them the ideal place to harvest wind power.

SSE, a British power company, has invested millions in what will be the largest onshore wind farm in the country when completed by 2024.

With its 103 wind turbines, the Viking wind farm could provide electricity to almost half a milllion homes.

Alistair Phillip-Davies said energy security was paramount.

Phillips-Davies said on CNBC that "we don't want oil and gas imported from places we don't trust and we no long want to deal" with.

A lack of capacity on the U.K. power grid could jeopardize its ambitious goal to be carbon-free by 2020.
